How do I know if I’m right for SmileDirectClub clear aligners?

How long do I need to wait after having my wisdom teeth removed before I can start with SmileDirectClub?
Typically, you will need to wait six weeks after having your third molars (or wisdom teeth) extracted before starting with SmileDirectClub. If your dentist or surgeon feels it’s safe, you may be able to start earlier with a signed release form from his or her office.
What if I still have my wisdom teeth?
If your dentist has recommended removal of wisdom teeth, then please follow that direction. If not, you can purchase our remote impression kit or book a scan and a state-licensed dentist or orthodontist will review your smile for you. And if it is determined that remote aligner treatment isn’t right for you, we will refund the cost of your impression kit.
Am I a candidate for SmileDirectClub if I have an implant?

Is the cost of my impression kit refundable?

I lost the registration code in my impression kit/new smile kit. What do I do?

What if I make a mistake on my impressions?

How does the scanning technology work?
Our SmileGuides use a highly accurate 3D optical camera to capture a digital map of your smile, including your teeth and gum lines. This 3D image helps us determine if our aligners are a fit for your smile and allows our lab to work with the doctor overseeing your case in creating your personalized treatment plan.
What are the SmileGuide's qualifications?
SmileGuides come from a variety of backgrounds and are trained to efficiently and accurately capture a 3D image of your smile. Many of our SmileGuides are registered dental assistants, dental hygienists, or home health aides. We actively monitor and evaluate the quality of their work—including your experience. Our SmileGuides are able to answer any questions you have about our service, our process, our technology, and most questions about straightening your smile using clear aligners.
What if I’m not in a scanning market or can’t or don’t want to go to a SmileShop?
That’s no problem at all. We also offer an easy-to-use, remote impression kit that includes an online photo assessment and dental impressions.
Does a licensed dentist or orthodontist review my case?
Yes. Your new smile will be reviewed, modified (if necessary), and approved by a state licensed dentist or orthodontist. This ensures your new smile is improved and aligns within the "Standards of Care." For more details, read our blog post.
Can I view what my expected results will be after treatment is completed?
Yes, after we receive your impressions or 3D image, we create a custom treatment plan which shows a before and after 3D visualization of how your teeth will move with treatment. If our doctors determine that our clear aligners aren't the right fit for you, we'll be happy to refund your impression kit. How long is the typical treatment process?
The licensed dentist or orthodontist assigned to you will determine the best plan for your needs, but we straighten most smiles in an average of 4-6 months.
Can I use SmileDirectClub clear aligners on only my upper or lower teeth?
It’s possible. The state-licensed dentist or orthodontist assigned to your case will decide what the safest and best treatment option is for you.
How do I use my Movemints?
We include Movemints with your aligners to help you get a tighter fit. Simply insert your aligners, put your Movemint between your teeth, and chew as if it were a piece of gum. Use your Movemints for 10–15 minutes at a time, 2–3 times per day.
Why don’t my aligners cover my molars?
Because we custom-make your aligners to fit your mouth, our goal is to make your aligners the appropriate size to realign your smile while being as unobtrusive as possible. Your aligners should cover at least one third of each molar.
How often should I wear my aligners?
Wear your aligners as directed by your prescribed treatment plan. Take them out for eating and drinking.
Will my teeth hurt during treatment?
Much like the days after a good workout at the gym, most people experience some tooth soreness for a few days after wearing new aligners. This is perfectly normal. It is a sign that your aligners are working, gently moving your teeth to their final destination. This soreness should gradually go away after the first few days of wearing new aligners. If the pain doesn't go away, contact our customer care team at 800-848-7566.
Are there any visits to a dental office during treatment?
Most SmileDirectClub customers don't need to make any additional visits to a dental office during their clear aligner treatment, aside from regular dental cleanings.
What happens if I lose an aligner?
We understand that mistakes happen. For starters, give our customer care team a call at 800-688-4010 so we can understand where you are in your smile journey and our dental team can provide the best recommendation for your care based on your unique situation. Your treating doctor and our dental team may advise you to wear your last set of aligners or to move on to the next set. If we determine you need a replacement aligner, we will send the first set to you for free. Subsequent replacement aligners may be subject to a $99 surcharge depending on the circumstances. Either way – give us a call and we’ll work with you to develop the best path forward for your treatment.
What happens after my clear aligner treatment is complete?
Protect your investment! We strongly recommend you safeguard your new smile with our custom-fit SmileDirectClub clear retainers. Without retainers, teeth have a tendency to shift back to their original positions. Keep them from moving back with our custom-fit retainers. One set costs $99 and is available to purchase toward the end of your treatment. Call our customer care team at 800-688-4010 about 4–5 weeks before you finish your treatment plan to place your order.
How do I preserve my new smile after treatment?
As with any orthodontic treatment, you'll need to wear a retainer regularly to maintain your new smile. You'll wear your retainers 24 hours a day (except for eating and drinking) for the first two weeks. After that, you'll want to wear your retainers only while you sleep. We recommend replacing your retainers every six months to keep them fresh.
How do I change my email or mailing address on file?

Does my purchase include free teeth whitening?

How can I keep track of when to change my aligners?
You can keep track of your aligners by logging into your account on our website. Once at your dashboard, simply enter the date on which you start wearing your first set of aligners and let the dashboard do the rest. You can log in to see when you’re scheduled to change to your next set, which aligner you should be wearing, and how many days and aligners you have left in your treatment plan. If you ever get off course because of a vacation or forgetting to wear your aligners, you can always reset your dashboard by clicking the Get Back on Track button.
What's the Club Warranty?
If at the end of your treatment plan, having followed the treatment guidelines, you haven’t achieved a straighter smile, contact us so your dentist or orthodontist can re-evaluate your results. If your re-evaluation is approved, you may be eligible for additional aligners to continue your journey. Don’t forget: You need to notify us within 30 days of completing your treatment plan for the warranty to remain valid.

Is it safe for my teen to wear their aligners while they play sports or instruments?
Whether your teen is playing sports or taking the stage, SmileDirectClub clear aligners can be worn with zero interference. They’re made from clear and comfortable BPA-free plastic and are easy to remove. For any sport where a mouthguard is recommended, your teen should remove the aligners and reinsert them after gameplay has ended. Additionally, while clear aligners can be worn during the playing of musical instruments, some teens may find it affects their ability to play, and the aligners should be removed until the activity has concluded.
What foods can my teen eat or not eat?
Because clear aligners are removable, there are no food restrictions. Teens may eat whatever they want, even apples and popcorn. They should always remove their aligners before eating and drinking anything other than cool water. Be sure your teen brushes and flosses after eating before putting their aligners back in.
How does my teen clean and maintain their clear aligners?

Just add water or combine with one of our universal cleaning tablets for a minty-fresh clean.

2. Soap and water
Squeeze a bit of gentle liquid soap into a cup of warm water and mix to form suds. Soak your aligners in the soapy water for 30 minutes, then rinse them under clean water.
3. Vinegar and water
In a cup, mix 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts warm water. Soak your aligners in the liquid for 20 minutes, then rinse in cool water. Caution: Do not use hot water. Hot water can damage the plastic in your aligners and make them unwearable.
4. Baking soda and water
Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with ½ cup water. Soak your aligners for 60 minutes. Rinse thoroughly before placing the aligners in your mouth.
5. Peroxide and water
Soak aligners in a solution of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and warm water for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly under clean water.
Are clear aligners painful to wear?
When you try a new sport or exercise move for the first time, muscles that aren’t accustomed to the new movement might feel sore the next day or few days. The same happens with aligners – you’re suddenly asking more of your mouth muscles, gums, and teeth.
But just like exercise, there’s a payoff if your teen keeps wearing clear aligners. Taking an over-the-counter pain medicine, like ibuprofen, may help ease this discomfort just as it would ease post-workout muscle pain. Ensure that your teen does not miss more than one day of continuous wear, so their teeth do not begin to shift back.
Do you offer retainers?
Yes. We offer retainers, and we strongly recommend you safeguard your teen’s new smile with them. Our custom-fit SmileDirectClub clear retainers lock their smile in place, so their teeth don’t shift again. One set (upper and lower) costs $99 and is available to purchase as your teen nears the end of treatment. Your teen will wear them at night.
Call our Customer Care team at 800-840-8445 about 4–5 weeks before your teen finishes their treatment plan to place the order. We recommend buying new retainers every 6 months to keep them fresh.
Can we talk to my teen’s dentist remotely?
You’re welcome to connect with your teen’s treating doctor through our remote telehealth platform. The SmileDirectClub dental care team will work with you to arrange a connection via video, chat, email, or phone. Our registered team of dental assistants and hygienists may also be able to answer your questions. Your teen’s treating doctor will oversee their treatment plan, and we’ll work with you to schedule regular virtual check-ins.
Does my teen need to have their wisdom teeth out?
Each orthodontic case is unique and different. If your teen’s regular dentist has recommended removal of their wisdom teeth, then please follow that direction before beginning clear aligner treatment.
Is there a midpoint check-in with a dentist, and if so, what can we expect during that check-in?
Your teen will receive a reminder to check in with their doctor via our telehealth platform, so the doctor can monitor their progress. During that time, you’ll provide pictures of your teen wearing their aligners so your treating doctor can evaluate fit and movement, plus the doctor will make sure your teen is tracking to their custom treatment plan.
How do I ensure that your dentist and my local dentist are connected about my teen’s care?
We recommend that every customer see their local dentist or orthodontist in person before beginning any remote aligner therapy treatment with us, and we suggest that your teen continues regular checkups during and after clear aligner treatment.
A dentist or orthodontist near you may also offer SmileDirectClub aligners at their office.
Do you fix complex bite or jaw issues?
SmileDirectClub clear aligners are designed for minor to moderate teeth correction, including gaps, crowding, rotation, and some bite correction. Braces correct more severe issues, including overbite, underbite, crossbite, or jaw disorders like TMJ. Your SmileDirectClub doctor will advise whether your teen is a good fit for SmileDirectClub clear aligner treatment. Not everyone is eligible for SmileDirectClub clear aligner therapy. Your treating doctor will discuss whether or not aligners are right for your teen. If the prescribing doctor deems that your teen’s case is too severe for SmileDirectClub aligner therapy, we will give you a full refund and refer you to an orthodontic specialist in your area who can help.
Why should I choose clear aligners over metal braces for my teen?
One of the benefits of clear aligners is that they can be easily removed, so your teen can practice good oral health habits like flossing and brushing. Metal braces often hinder that process for teens, and they struggle to keep up with proper oral hygiene. Plus, clear aligners cost up to 60% less than traditional braces, and the treatment time is much shorter.
What happens if I’m not satisfied with the results?
If at the end of your teen’s treatment plan, they have followed the treatment guidelines and they have not achieved a smile they love, contact us so their dentist or orthodontist can re-evaluate their results. If their re-evaluation is approved, your teen may be eligible for additional aligners to continue their journey. Don’t forget: You need to notify us within 30 days of your teen completing their treatment plan for this warranty to remain valid.
To maintain the warranty: Your teen must wear their aligners as directed; they must register their aligners at SmileDirectClub.com/patient-portal; and they must respond to each virtual check-in by sending an email with the requested photos.
How do I prevent my teen from losing their aligners?
Encourage your teen to keep their aligner case in the same, easily accessible spot and to always bring their case with them when they’re leaving home. They can store their aligners in the case while eating or drinking and easily put them back in their mouth once finished. If you’re traveling for an extended period of time, be sure to pack the next set of aligners, so they can switch them while you’re away from home.
What is the right age to start straightening teeth?
Patients must be at least 12 years old to begin treatment with SmileDirectClub. Additionally, all permanent teeth must be present. For patients under the age of 18, a parent or guardian signature is required on the provided medical and dental history form.
How do I follow my teen’s progress?
You can keep track of your teen’s treatment via our telehealth platform. On the dashboard, enter the date on which your teen starts wearing their first set of aligners, then we’ll do the rest. You can log in to see when they’re scheduled to change to their next set of aligners, which aligners they should be wearing, and how many days/aligners they have left in their treatment plan. If your teen ever gets off course because of a vacation or forgetting to wear their aligners, you can always reset their dashboard by clicking the Get Back on Track button.
How does my teen know when to switch their aligners?
When your teen receives their aligners, they should log in to their account at SmileDirectClub.com/checkin and let us know they’ve received them. We’ll send notifications when it’s time to switch to a new set of aligners. They’ll also receive a prompt to upload progress pictures so their assigned doctor can monitor their progress through our telehealth platform. Using the dashboard will encourage teens to stay on track to get a smile they’ll love by the end of their treatment plan.

What is bright on?
bright on is our premium whitening, prescribed by one of our dentists. It is a full system of teeth whitening that gets your teeth to their brightest bright
How do I use bright on?
Use morning and evening daily for 1 week. Brush teeth first – do not floss. Open the bright on pen and twist the bottom until gel is visible on the brush. Brush the gel onto your front top and bottom teeth in a circular motion and wear for 5 minutes. (When paired with our LED accelerator light, wear for up to 10 minutes.) Avoid putting gel on your gums. The gel will lightly foam as it penetrates.
After 5 minutes, spit out the excess foam. Do not rinse, eat, or drink for 20 minutes. Avoid foods and drinks that easily stain teeth (wine, coffee, etc.) for 24 hours.
How long does bright on whitening last?
A 1-week supply of bright on contains 4 pens (each pen contains 4 applications), and when used twice daily will get your teeth to their brightest bright. The results last for up to 90 days.
How often can I use bright on?
We recommend using a 1-week supply of bright on once every 90 days.
What does the LED accelerator light do?
Enhance the power of your bright on premium teeth whitening with the same type of LED light technology used by dentists. This cool blue LED light activates our Bright Boost™ formula to work even faster.
How do I use the LED accelerator light?
First brush your teeth but do not floss. Then open the bright on premium whitening pen and twist the bottom until the gel is visible on the brush. Brush the gel onto your front top and bottom teeth in a circular motion. Then plug the light into your phone using the appropriate attachment, insert it into your mouth, and wear it for up to 10 minutes. It’s normal for the gel to foam on your teeth, and it’s harmless if you happen to swallow some. Once finished, take out the light and spit out any excess gel.
How do I clean the LED accelerator light?
Remove the detachable Android and iPhone cables from the LED light to avoid damaging them. Using lukewarm water, rinse and wipe off the mouthpiece. Allow the light to dry in a well-ventilated place. Once dry, pack it into its plastic case.
Is bright on vegan?
Yes, bright on is vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, and lactose-free.
Can I use bright on if I have fillings, bonding, or veneers?
Using teeth whitening with bonding or fillings can discolor your teeth. bright on does not whiten veneers.

What is the SMILECHECK™ system?
SMILECHECK is our proprietary technology system that connects you and your prescribing dentist or orthodontist and manages your treatment plan and dental case records. Through a secure provider portal, your doctor can view images and dental impressions, and prescribe your treatment. These tools equip SmileGuides and lab technicians in performing their work and managing your case file. And SMILECHECK provides you, the customer, direct access to upload photos and images, manage your account, and view your treatment plan.
Is there a minimum age required to use SmileDirectClub clear aligners?
Our minimum age requirement is 12 years old, and patients must have all permanent teeth present. For patients under the age of 18, we need a parent/guardian signature on the Medical/Dental History Form provided during the evaluation step.
Does SmileDirectClub ship internationally?
SmileDirectClub clear aligners are available in the US, Canada, Australia, UK and New Zealand.
Do you have before and after photos of patients who have used the SmileDirectClub clear aligners?

Can I purchase impression kits for friends or family members?
Yes, you may purchase impression kits and aligners for more than one individual. The best way to do so is for each patient to have an account tied to a unique email address, regardless of who made the purchase. While we’re actively working to update our platform to allow a single user account to manage multiple customers, for now you will need to purchase each kit under a different email address to ensure proper prescription and monitoring of treatment. If you only have one email address, there are many free email services available that you can use.
I canceled my SmileDirectClub account. Can I reopen it?
Yes! If you canceled your order, you can restart with SmileDirectClub at any time. To get started, submit another Smile Assessment by selecting Am I A Candidate?

What if I think my teeth need more movement at the end of my treatment plan?

If at the end of treatment, having followed the treatment plan prescribed by your state-licensed dentist or orthodontist, you don’t achieve the smile you love, contact us so your doctor can re-evaluate your results.
