Typically, you will need to wait six weeks after having your third molars (or wisdom teeth) extracted before starting with SmileDirectClub. If your dentist or surgeon feels it’s safe, you may be able to start earlier with a signed release form from their office.

If your dentist has recommended removal of wisdom teeth, then please follow that direction. If not, you can purchase our from-home impression kit or book a free, in-person 3D scan, and a state-licensed dentist or orthodontist will review your smile for you. Treatment with Nighttime Aligners™ is a safe and effective path to a straighter smile. Yes, after we receive your impressions or 3D image, we create a custom treatment plan which shows a before and after 3D visualization of how your teeth will move with treatment. Your treatment plan can be viewed in your account.

SmileDirectClub aligners move all teeth simultaneously, distributing force equally across your entire mouth. The majority of SmileDirectClub’s treatment plans are 4-6 months.

Movemints help you seat the aligners on your teeth. After you insert your aligners, simply put a Movemint between your teeth, and chew as if it were a piece of gum. Use your Movemints for 10–15 minutes at a time, 2–3 times per day.

Our goal is to make your custom aligners the appropriate size to realign your smile while being as unobtrusive as possible. Your aligners should cover at least one third of each molar.

Wear your aligners as directed by your prescribed treatment plan. Take them out for eating and drinking.

Much like the days after a good workout at the gym, most people experience some tooth soreness for a few days after wearing new aligners. This is perfectly normal. It is a sign that your aligners are working, gently moving your teeth to their final destination. This soreness should gradually go away after the first few days of wearing new aligners. Aside from their regular dental cleanings, most Club members don't need to make any additional visits to a dental office during their aligner treatment.

We know that mistakes happen, which is why it’s important to always keep your previous aligner sets. Your treating doctor and our dental team may advise you to wear your last set of aligners or to move on to the next set. Your first replacement is free. Subsequent replacement aligners may be subject to a $99 surcharge depending on the circumstances.

Without retainers, teeth have a tendency to shift back to their original positions. Keep them from moving back with our custom-fit retainers. SmileDirectClub aligners can be worn with zero interference. They’re designed using ComfortSense™ technology and created from comfortable soft, medium, and firm BPA-free plastics. For any sport where a mouthguard is recommended, however, your teen should remove their aligners and reinsert them after gameplay has ended. Additionally, while our aligners can be worn during the playing of musical instruments, if your teen finds it affects their ability to play, the aligners can be removed until your teen is finished playing.

Because aligners are removable, there are no food restrictions. So long as your teen removes their aligners before eating and drinking anything other than cool water, they may eat whatever they want – even apples and popcorn. Be sure your teen brushes and flosses after eating, before putting their aligners back in.

Caution: Do not use hot water. It can damage the plastic in your aligners and make them unwearable. Try these methods instead.

2. Soap and water Squeeze a bit of gentle liquid soap into a cup of warm water and mix to form suds. Soak your aligners in the soapy water for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly in cool water.

3. Vinegar and water Mix 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts warm water in a cup. Soak your aligners in the liquid for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly in cool water.

4. Baking soda and water Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with ½ cup water. Soak your aligners for 60 minutes, then rinse thoroughly in cool water.

5. Peroxide and water Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide and warm water. Soak your aligners for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly in cool water.

Each orthodontic case is unique and different. If your teen’s regular dentist has recommended removal of their wisdom teeth, then please follow that direction before beginning aligner treatment.

Your teen will receive regular reminders for Smile Check-ins™ with their doctor via our telehealth platform or the app, so their progress can be monitored. During that time, you’ll provide pictures of your teen wearing their aligners so your prescribing doctor can evaluate fit and movement. The doctor will make sure your teen is tracking to their custom treatment plan.

SmileDirectClub aligners are designed for minor to moderate teeth correction including gaps, crowding, rotation, and some bite correction. Braces can correct more severe issues, including overbite, underbite, crossbite, or jaw disorders like TMJ. Your assigned SmileDirectClub doctor will advise whether SmileDirectClub aligner treatment is a good fit for your teen. If the doctor deems that your teen’s case is too severe for SmileDirectClub aligner therapy, we will give you a full refund and refer you to an orthodontic specialist in your area who can help.

If at the end of your teen’s treatment plan they have followed the treatment guidelines and have not achieved a smile they love, please contact us via chat, phone call, or email to arrange a Smile Check-in™ with our Dental Care team. They'll evaluate your teen's plan and progress to determine if an aligner touch-up is necessary. If it is, we’ll create and ship new aligners, at no cost to you.

Encourage your teen to keep their aligner case in the same easily accessible spot, and to always bring their case with them when they’re leaving home. They can store their aligners in the case while eating or drinking and put them back in their mouth once finished. If you’re traveling for an extended period of time, be sure to pack your teen's next set of aligners, so they can switch them while you’re away from home.

Individuals must be at least 12 years old to begin treatment with SmileDirectClub. Additionally, all permanent teeth must be present. For those under the age of 18, a parent or guardian signature is required on the provided medical and dental history form.

You can keep track of your teen’s treatment using our telehealth platform or the SmileDirectClub app. On the dashboard, enter the date on which your teen starts wearing their first set of aligners, then we’ll do the rest. You can log in to see which aligners they should be wearing, when they’re scheduled to switch to their next set, and how many days/aligners they have left in their treatment plan. If your teen ever gets off course after taking a vacation or forgetting to wear their aligners, just reset their dashboard by selecting the Get Back on Track button.

When your teen receives their aligners, they should log in to their account at SmileDirectClub.com/checkin, or on the SmileDirectClub app, to let us know they’ve received them. We’ll send notifications when it’s time to switch to a new set of aligners. They’ll also receive a prompt to upload progress pictures so their assigned doctor can monitor their progress through our telehealth platform. Using the dashboard will encourage teens to stay on track to get a smile they’ll love by the end of their treatment plan.
