Our clear aligner therapy includes several sets of tight-fitting, custom-made, BPA-free clear plastic trays that gradually shift teeth into their desired position.
SmileDirectClub Clear Aligners
What are SmileDirectClub clear aligners?
How do SmileDirectClub clear aligners straighten teeth?
Our clear aligners come as a set of multiple aligners. Each aligner will make slight adjustments to tooth position, a process that is mapped out in advance by a SmileDirectClub affiliated, duly licensed dentist or orthodontist who reviews your case. You’ll begin wearing a new set of aligners as prescribed, advancing you to the next stage of your new smile. We make it even easier by shipping your aligners directly to you.
What are SmileDirectClub clear aligners made of?
Our aligners are made of a smooth, comfortable, BPA-free plastic that won't irritate your cheeks and gums like traditional metal braces often do.
Are SmileDirectClub clear aligners trimmed in a scalloped fashion or straight across?
SmileDirectClub clear aligners are trimmed in a straight fashion across the top, allowing us to get optimal turning force to straighten your teeth. This also eliminates the need for buttons or attachments, which are generally considered unsightly or uncomfortable.
How do I know if I’m right for SmileDirectClub clear aligners?
Every SmileDirectClub order begins with a free Smile Assessment and a remote impression kit or 3D image to determine if you are a smile candidate. The clear aligner system is designed for minor to moderate teeth correction, including space between teeth, crowding, rotations, and some bite correction. Am I a Candidate?
How long do I need to wait after having my wisdom teeth removed before I can start with SmileDirectClub?
Typically, you will need to wait six weeks after having your third molars (or wisdom teeth) extracted before starting with SmileDirectClub. If your dentist or surgeon feels it’s safe, you may be able to start earlier with a signed release form from his or her office.
What if I still have my wisdom teeth?
If your dentist has recommended removal of wisdom teeth, then please follow that direction. If not, you can purchase our remote impression kit or book a scan and a state-licensed dentist or orthodontist will review your smile for you. And if it is determined that remote aligner treatment isn’t right for you, we will refund the cost of your impression kit.
Am I a candidate for SmileDirectClub if I have an implant?
Our aligners can work for some customers who have an implant. The licensed dentist or orthodontist assigned to you will assess your smile and determine if SmileDirectClub aligners are the best fit for you. If they determine they're not the best fit for your needs, the cost of your impression kit or scan is fully refundable.
Can I use SmileDirectClub clear aligners if I have missing teeth?
Our aligners can work for some customers who have missing teeth. The licensed dentist or orthodontist assigned to you will assess your smile and determine if SmileDirectClub aligners are the best fit for you. If they determine they're not the best fit for your needs, the cost of your impression kit or scan is fully refundable.
Nighttime Clear Aligners®
Is Nighttime Clear Aligner Therapy Safe?
Nighttime clear aligner therapy is a safe and effective path to a straighter smile. Like any clear aligner treatment plan, patients should follow their licensed dentist or orthodontist’s prescription of 10 consecutive hours of wear per night. While the average time of treatment may be longer than the average 22-hour a day aligner therapy, this discreet and flexible alternative will safely achieve desired results.
How are Nighttime Clear Aligners different from SmileDirectClub’s traditional clear aligner treatment plan?
Nighttime Clear Aligners provide a more discreet, flexible treatment plan for customers with mild to moderate spacing and crowding issues. SmileDirectClub’s custom-made, BPA-free clear aligners will safely straighten your teeth with at least 10 hours of continuous wear each night.
Traditional 22-hour a day clear aligner therapy is a more convenient, faster option for customers seeking treatment for a timely event like a graduation or a wedding.
Will my teeth move more slowly because I am only wearing aligners at night?
Each aligner set is custom-made to safely move your teeth within the prescribed time provided by your licensed dentist or orthodontist. Any deviation from the prescribed treatment plan is not advised.
Is SmileDirectClub the only company to offer Nighttime Clear Aligner treatment?
Nighttime Clear Aligners is the first aligner system on the market that safely allows customers to wear clear aligners for only 10 continuous hours per night. Wearing Nighttime Clear Aligners while you sleep is more convenient to many people's lifestyle.
Why should I try Nighttime Clear Aligners?
There are three key reasons to take advantage of SmileDirectClub’s Nighttime Clear Aligners:
Convenience: Customers can get the smile they’ll love while only wearing aligners for 10 hours per night;
Affordability: Nighttime Clear Aligners cost up to 60% less than traditional braces.* You can get a smile you love for a flat fee.
Accessibility: Customers using Nighttime Clear Aligners may have careers or lifestyles that preclude them from wearing aligners during the day. These customers now have the flexibility to only focus on straightening their teeth at night.
Nighttime Clear Aligner therapy provides a more discreet, flexible teeth straightening solution for customers who cannot commit to 22 hours of daily wear. 10-hour aligners are safe and very discreet to wear because customers only wear them at night and when they sleep.
Impression Kit & 3D Image Process
How do I choose between an impression kit or a scan?
A 3D image can be done at any SmileShop. In a 30-minute appointment, a SmileGuide will make a 3D image of your smile and send it directly to our lab so a dental professional can get started on building your custom smile plan. SmileShops are located across the country. Find one near you on our Locations page. If you’re not near a SmileShop, or if you’d rather get started in the comfort of your own home, a remote impression kit may be right for you. Simply use the kit to take impressions of your smile, then send it back to us. Return shipping is free. All you have to do is drop your completed kit in the mail!
Where can I buy an impression kit or a new smile kit?
You can purchase an impression kit for $49 here.
Is the cost of my impression kit refundable?
Remote clear aligner therapy isn't right for everyone. That's why we'll refund the cost of your impression kit if the dentist or orthodontist determines our clear aligners aren't a fit for you. Simply call our customer care team at 800-688-4010 after learning about your eligibility, to have your refund processed.
I lost the registration code in my impression kit/new smile kit. What do I do?
We can help! Give us a call at 800-688-4010 or send us a chat. All you'll need is your receipt. Simply provide the date of the purchase and your order number, and we can generate a new code for you.
What if I make a mistake on my impressions?
If our lab receives distorted impressions that prevent them from making accurate aligners, we will contact you regarding sending another impression kit. We’ll send you a free retake kit.
Can someone walk me through using the impression kit?
Yes! We regularly host virtual SmileParties where our Lead Dentist will walk you through using the impression kit. For more information about our SmileParties, check our Facebook page.
What is a SmileShop?
It’s your first step to getting a smile you’ll love. During your visit, a SmileGuide will take a 3D image of your current smile, which will be sent over to a state-licensed dentist or orthodontist in our network to oversee your new smile plan. The best part is you only have to go once, and it’s just 30 minutes. Bye, waiting rooms!
Where are SmileShops located?
Our SmileShops are located across North America. For a list of shops, visit our Locations page.
How do I schedule a scanning appointment?
Simply book a scan on our Locations page. You’ll be given a few dates and times to choose from and our team will follow-up to confirm your scheduled appointment.
What happens if I am late for my appointment?
Life happens, and sometimes you run late. Please call us at 800-688-4010 and let us know when we can expect you to arrive at the SmileShop. We'll do everything in our power to work you into the schedule.
What if I need to reschedule my appointment?
Give us a call at 800-688-4010 at least 24 hours before your appointment time to reschedule your appointment and avoid a cancellation fee.
How long does the scan take?
About 20 to 30 minutes, give or take.
How does the scanning technology work?
Our SmileGuides use a highly accurate 3D optical camera to capture a digital map of your smile, including your teeth and gum lines. This 3D image helps us determine if our aligners are a fit for your smile and allows our lab to work with the doctor overseeing your case in creating your personalized treatment plan.
What are the SmileGuide's qualifications?
SmileGuides come from a variety of backgrounds and are trained to efficiently and accurately capture a 3D image of your smile. Many of our SmileGuides are registered dental assistants, dental hygienists, or home health aides. We actively monitor and evaluate the quality of their work—including your experience. Our SmileGuides are able to answer any questions you have about our service, our process, our technology, and most questions about straightening your smile using clear aligners.
What if I’m not in a scanning market or can’t or don’t want to go to a SmileShop?
That’s no problem at all. We also offer an easy-to-use, remote impression kit that includes an online photo assessment and dental impressions.
Does a licensed dentist or orthodontist review my case?
Yes. Your new smile will be reviewed, modified (if necessary), and approved by a duly licensed dentist or orthodontist. This ensures your new smile is improved and aligns within the "Standards of Care." For more details, read our blog post.
Can I view what my expected results will be after treatment is completed?
Yes, after we receive your impressions or 3D image, we create a custom treatment plan which shows a before and after 3D visualization of how your teeth will move with treatment. If our doctors determine that our clear aligners aren't the right fit for you, we'll be happy to refund your impression kit. You can see examples of how our custom treatment plans work by visiting our Results page.
How long is the typical treatment process?
The licensed dentist or orthodontist assigned to you will determine the best plan for your needs, but we straighten most smiles in an average of 4-6 months.
Can I use SmileDirectClub clear aligners on only my upper or lower teeth?
It’s possible. The state-licensed dentist or orthodontist assigned to your case will decide what the safest and best treatment option is for you.
How do I use my Chewies?
We include Chewies with your aligners to help you get a tighter fit. Simply insert your aligners, put your Chewie between your teeth, and chew as if it were a piece of gum. Use your Chewies for 10–15 minutes at a time, 2–3 times per day.
Why don’t my aligners cover my molars?
Because we custom-make your aligners to fit your mouth, our goal is to make your aligners the appropriate size to realign your smile while being as unobtrusive as possible. Your aligners should cover at least one third of each molar.
How often should I wear my aligners?
Wear your aligners as directed by your prescribed smile plan. Take them out for eating and drinking.
Will my teeth hurt during treatment?
Much like the days after a good workout at the gym, most people experience some tooth soreness for a few days after wearing new aligners. This is perfectly normal. It is a sign that your aligners are working, gently moving your teeth to their final destination. This soreness should gradually go away after the first few days of wearing new aligners. If the pain doesn't go away, contact our customer care team at 800-848-7566.
Are there any visits to a dental office during treatment?
Most SmileDirectClub customers don't need to make any additional visits to a dental office during their clear aligner treatment, aside from regular dental cleanings.
What happens if I lose an aligner?
We understand that mistakes happen. For starters, give our customer care team a call at 800-688-4010 so we can understand where you are in your smile journey and our dental team can provide the best recommendation for your care based on your unique situation. Your treating doctor and our dental team may advise you to wear your last set of aligners or to move on to the next set. If we determine you need a replacement aligner, we will send it to you for free, but it can take 3-5 weeks for your replacement aligner to ship. Either way – give us a call and we’ll work with you to develop the best path forward for your treatment.
What happens after my clear aligner treatment is complete?
Protect your investment! We strongly recommend you safeguard your new smile with our custom-fit SmileDirectClub clear retainers. Without retainers, teeth have a tendency to shift back to their original positions. Keep them from moving back with our custom-fit retainers. One set costs $99 and is available to purchase toward the end of your treatment. Call our customer care team at 800-688-4010 about 4–5 weeks before you finish your smile plan to place your order.
How do I preserve my new smile after treatment?
As with any orthodontic treatment, you'll need to wear a retainer regularly to maintain your new smile. You'll wear your retainers 24 hours a day (except for eating and drinking) for the first two weeks. After that, you'll want to wear your retainers only while you sleep. We recommend replacing your retainers every six months to keep them fresh.
How do I change my email or mailing address on file?
Making changes to your account information is easy. Log in to your account on our website or call us at 800-688-4010 to update your shipping address, email, phone number, or credit card on file. We’re happy to help you keep your contact information current.
Does my purchase include free teeth whitening?
Yes, all customers receive complimentary bright on™ teeth whitening so you can brighten your smile while you straighten it.
How can I keep track of when to change my aligners?
You can keep track of your aligners by logging into your account on our website. Once at your dashboard, simply enter the date on which you start wearing your first set of aligners and let the dashboard do the rest. You can log in to see when you’re scheduled to change to your next set, which aligner you should be wearing, and how many days and aligners you have left in your smile plan. If you ever get off course because of a vacation or forgetting to wear your aligners, you can always reset your dashboard by clicking the Get Back on Track button.
What's the Club Warranty?
If at the end of your smile plan, having followed the treatment guidelines, you haven’t achieved a straighter smile, contact us so your dentist or orthodontist can re-evaluate your results. If your re-evaluation is approved, you may be eligible for additional aligners to continue your journey. Don’t forget: You need to notify us within 30 days of completing your smile plan for the warranty to remain valid.
To maintain your warranty:
Wear your aligners as directed;

Parents & Teens
Why is SmileDirectClub so much cheaper than braces and other invisible aligners?
We’re able to offer a competitive price because our telehealth platform eliminates office overhead that makes traditional orthodontics costly. We ship aligners directly to you, so you can straighten your teeth for up to 60% less than traditional braces.
Why is treatment time so much shorter than braces?
Braces move one tooth at a time via brackets attached to single points on teeth. SmileDirectClub clear aligners move all teeth simultaneously, distributing force equally across the entire tooth. Typical braces treatment time takes 2 years, while the majority of SmileDirectClub’s treatment plans are 4–6 months.
Our network of dentists and orthodontists use our proprietary computer algorithm to carefully plan the coordinated movements of every tooth to safely and efficiently deliver a smile you’ll love.
Does insurance cover SmileDirectClub?
SmileDirectClub is in-network with most major insurance providers, including UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and Cigna. We can also check for eligibility at Delta Dental, Humana, MetLife, and many more. See how much your insurance will cover here.
What happens if there’s a dental issue during treatment?
Our 24/7 care team can connect you with our team of experienced dental professionals or your teen’s doctor via video, chat, email, or phone. If an issue requires an in-person visit, our team will refer you to an affiliated SmileDirectClub dentist near you. Our dental team, with the assistance of the local dentist, will recommend next steps.
What happens if my teen loses an aligner?

Then, our dental team will provide the best recommendation for your teen’s care based on their unique situation. Your teen’s treating doctor and our dental team may advise that they wear their last set of aligners or move on to the next set. Either way – give us a call, and we’ll work with you and your teen to develop the best path forward.
Can I use my HSA/FSA to cover the cost of SmileDirectClub?

With SmileDirectClub, your teen will receive a customized clear aligner treatment plan, professional dental oversight, 24/7 access to our care team, free bright on™ premium teeth whitening, and our Smile Guarantee.
There are no hidden fees with SmileDirectClub. Make a one-time payment of $1895. You can also choose to pay over time through SmilePay™ with a down payment of $250, plus $85 a month for 24 months. No credit checks. No forms to fill out. And either way, it costs up to 60% less than braces or other invisible aligners.

Where are your aligners made?
SmileDirectClub’s aligners are made at our Tennessee manufacturing facility in the United States.
How do I know which teeth straightening solution is best for my teen?
Your assigned dentist or orthodontist will determine which clear aligner treatment plan is best for your teen. Our original 22-hour-wear Clear Aligners will help your teen achieve a smile they’ll love in as little as 4–6 months. They’re faster and more convenient for customers who want to complete their new smile in time for a special event – like graduation or back-to-school photos.
Nighttime Clear Aligners® are worn for 10 continuous hours each night. They provide a more flexible solution for teens who don’t want to commit to 22 hours of daily wear. While treatment plans are a little longer (10 months on average), if you’re worried about your teen misplacing a set of aligners, Nighttime Clear Aligners provide the added bonus of never having to leave the house.
Both options work best for cases of mild to moderate spacing or crowding. SmileDirectClub’s aligners straighten teeth without buttons, attachments, or teeth filings. Unlike with metal braces, your teen will be able to eat their favorite foods and maintain good oral health habits like brushing and flossing without brackets in the way.
Is it safe for my teen to wear their aligners while they play sports or instruments?
Whether your teen is playing sports or taking the stage, SmileDirectClub clear aligners can be worn with zero interference. They’re made from clear and comfortable BPA-free plastic and are easy to remove. For any sport where a mouthguard is recommended, your teen should remove the aligners and reinsert them after gameplay has ended. Additionally, while clear aligners can be worn during the playing of musical instruments, some teens may find it affects their ability to play, and the aligners should be removed until the activity has concluded.
What foods can my teen eat or not eat?
Because clear aligners are removable, there are no food restrictions. Teens may eat whatever they want, even apples and popcorn. They should always remove their aligners before eating and drinking anything other than cool water. Be sure your teen brushes and flosses after eating before putting their aligners back in.
How does my teen clean and maintain their clear aligners?
1. smile spa™
Our smile spa is the first cleaner to combine ultrasonic vibrations and UV light. It thoroughly cleans all sorts of mouth gadgets – clear aligners, retainers, sport mouthguards, nightguards, bruxism appliances, TMJ appliances, dentures, water flosser tips, and even toothbrush heads. It kills 99% of odor-causing bacteria* with two 5-minute cleaning cycles. The durable, stainless steel reservoir is large enough to clean multiple items at once. Just add water or combine with one of our universal cleaning tablets for a minty-fresh clean.
*5 common odor-causing bacteria: S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, S. mutans, P. loesheii, F. nucleatum.
2. Soap and water
Squeeze a bit of gentle liquid soap into a cup of warm water and mix to form suds. Soak your aligners in the soapy water for 30 minutes, then rinse them under clean water.
3. Vinegar and water
In a cup, mix 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts warm water. Soak your aligners in the liquid for 20 minutes, then rinse in cool water. Caution: Do not use hot water. Hot water can damage the plastic in your aligners and make them unwearable.
4. Baking soda and water
Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with ½ cup water. Soak your aligners for 60 minutes. Rinse thoroughly before placing the aligners in your mouth.
5. Peroxide and water
Soak aligners in a solution of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and warm water for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly under clean water.
Are clear aligners painful to wear?
When you try a new sport or exercise move for the first time, muscles that aren’t accustomed to the new movement might feel sore the next day or few days. The same happens with aligners – you’re suddenly asking more of your mouth muscles, gums, and teeth.
But just like exercise, there’s a payoff if your teen keeps wearing clear aligners. Taking an over-the-counter pain medicine, like ibuprofen, may help ease this discomfort just as it would ease post-workout muscle pain. Ensure that your teen does not miss more than one day of continuous wear, so their teeth do not begin to shift back.
Do you offer retainers?
Yes. We offer retainers, and we strongly recommend you safeguard your teen’s new smile with them. Our custom-fit SmileDirectClub clear retainers lock their smile in place, so their teeth don’t shift again. One set (upper and lower) costs $99 and is available to purchase as your teen nears the end of treatment. Your teen will wear them at night.
Call our Customer Care team at 800-840-8445 about 4–5 weeks before your teen finishes their smile plan to place the order. We recommend buying new retainers every 6 months to keep them fresh.
Can we talk to my teen’s dentist remotely?
You’re welcome to connect with your teen’s treating doctor through our remote telehealth platform. The SmileDirectClub dental care team will work with you to arrange a connection via video, chat, email, or phone. Our registered team of dental assistants and hygienists may also be able to answer your questions. Your teen’s treating doctor will oversee their treatment plan, and we’ll work with you to schedule regular virtual check-ins.
Does my teen need to have their wisdom teeth out?
Each orthodontic case is unique and different. If your teen’s regular dentist has recommended removal of their wisdom teeth, then please follow that direction before beginning clear aligner treatment.
Is there a midpoint check-in with a dentist, and if so, what can we expect during that check-in?
Your teen will receive a reminder to check in with their doctor via our telehealth platform, so the doctor can monitor their progress. During that time, you’ll provide pictures of your teen wearing their aligners so your treating doctor can evaluate fit and movement, plus the doctor will make sure your teen is tracking to their custom treatment plan.
How do I ensure that your dentist and my local dentist are connected about my teen’s care?
We recommend that every customer see their local dentist or orthodontist in person before beginning any remote aligner therapy treatment with us, and we suggest that your teen continues regular checkups during and after clear aligner treatment.
A dentist or orthodontist near you may also offer SmileDirectClub aligners at their office.
Do you fix complex bite or jaw issues?
SmileDirectClub clear aligners are designed for minor to moderate teeth correction, including gaps, crowding, rotation, and some bite correction. Braces correct more severe issues, including overbite, underbite, crossbite, or jaw disorders like TMJ. Your SmileDirectClub doctor will advise whether your teen is a good fit for SmileDirectClub clear aligner treatment. Not everyone is eligible for SmileDirectClub clear aligner therapy. Your treating doctor will discuss whether or not aligners are right for your teen. If the prescribing doctor deems that your teen’s case is too severe for SmileDirectClub aligner therapy, we will give you a full refund and refer you to an orthodontic specialist in your area who can help.
Why should I choose clear aligners over metal braces for my teen?
One of the benefits of clear aligners is that they can be easily removed, so your teen can practice good oral health habits like flossing and brushing. Metal braces often hinder that process for teens, and they struggle to keep up with proper oral hygiene. Plus, clear aligners cost up to 60% less than traditional braces, and the treatment time is much shorter.
What happens if I’m not satisfied with the results?
If at the end of your teen’s smile plan, they have followed the treatment guidelines and they have not achieved a smile they love, contact us so their dentist or orthodontist can re-evaluate their results. If their re-evaluation is approved, your teen may be eligible for additional aligners to continue their journey. Don’t forget: You need to notify us within 30 days of your teen completing their smile plan for this warranty to remain valid.
To maintain the warranty: Your teen must wear their aligners as directed; they must register their aligners at SmileDirectClub.com/patient-portal; and they must respond to each virtual check-in by sending an email with the requested photos.
How do I prevent my teen from losing their aligners?
Encourage your teen to keep their aligner case in the same, easily accessible spot and to always bring their case with them when they’re leaving home. They can store their aligners in the case while eating or drinking and easily put them back in their mouth once finished. If you’re traveling for an extended period of time, be sure to pack the next set of aligners, so they can switch them while you’re away from home.
What is the right age to start straightening teeth?
Patients must be at least 12 years old to begin treatment with SmileDirectClub. Additionally, all permanent teeth must be present. For patients under the age of 18, a parent or guardian signature is required on the provided medical and dental history form.
How do I follow my teen’s progress?
You can keep track of your teen’s treatment via our telehealth platform. On the dashboard, enter the date on which your teen starts wearing their first set of aligners, then we’ll do the rest. You can log in to see when they’re scheduled to change to their next set of aligners, which aligners they should be wearing, and how many days/aligners they have left in their treatment plan. If your teen ever gets off course because of a vacation or forgetting to wear their aligners, you can always reset their dashboard by clicking the Get Back on Track button.
How does my teen know when to switch their aligners?
When your teen receives their aligners, they should log in to their account at SmileDirectClub.com/checkin and let us know they’ve received them. We’ll send notifications when it’s time to switch to a new set of aligners. They’ll also receive a prompt to upload progress pictures so their assigned doctor can monitor their progress through our telehealth platform. Using the dashboard will encourage teens to stay on track to get a smile they’ll love by the end of their treatment plan.
Is there somewhere I can talk to other parents whose teens have gone through SmileDirectClub treatment?
You don’t have to take our word for it – ask one of over 1 million Club members who have achieved a new smile here. This Facebook group is not affiliated with SmileDirectClub in any way, so we encourage you to join and ask around.
What is bright on?
bright on is our premium whitening, prescribed by one of our dentists for customers 18 or older. It is a full system of teeth whitening that gets your teeth to their brightest bright.
How do I use bright on?
Use morning and evening daily for 1 week. Brush teeth first – do not floss. Open the bright on pen and twist the bottom until gel is visible on the brush. Brush the gel onto your front top and bottom teeth in a circular motion and wear for 5 minutes. (When paired with our LED accelerator light, wear for up to 10 minutes.) Avoid putting gel on your gums. The gel will lightly foam as it penetrates.
After 5 minutes, spit out the excess foam. Do not rinse, eat, or drink for 20 minutes. Avoid foods and drinks that easily stain teeth (wine, coffee, etc.) for 24 hours.
