How does the scanning technology work?

Our SmileGuides use a highly accurate 3D optical camera to capture a digital map of your smile, including your teeth and gum lines. This 3D image helps us determine if our aligners are a fit for your smile and allows our lab to work with the doctor overseeing your case in creating your personalized treatment plan.

How do I schedule a scanning appointment?

Simply book a scan on our  Locations page. You’ll be given a few dates and times to choose from and our team will follow-up to confirm your scheduled appointment.

What if I need to reschedule my appointment?

Treatment Process

Does a licensed dentist or orthodontist review my case?

Can I view what my expected results will be after treatment is completed?

Yes, after we receive your impressions or 3D scan, we create a custom treatment plan which shows a before and after 3D visualization of how your teeth will move with treatment. If our doctors determine that our invisible aligners aren't the right fit for you, we'll be happy to refund your impression kit. You can see examples of how our custom treatment plans work by visiting our Results page.

How long is the typical treatment process?

The licensed dentist or orthodontist assigned to you will determine the best plan for your needs, but we straighten most smiles in an average of 6 months.

Why do I need aligners for both arches if I only want to change one?

Fixing crowding or spacing may change your bite. In order to maintain a correct bite, both upper and lower teeth need to be taken into account as a part of your smile plan. In some cases, correcting only a single arch could result in your teeth shifting back to their original positions. In order to safely get – and keep – the smile you’ll love, it’s important to use aligners on both arches.

Can I use SmileDirectClub invisible aligners on only my upper or lower teeth?

Fixing crowding or spacing issues changes your bite. In order to maintain a correct bite, both upper and lower teeth need to be taken into account as a part of your treatment plan. Additionally, only correcting a single arch may result in your teeth shifting back to their original positions. For these reasons, all plans include both upper and lower arches.

How do I use my chewies?

We include Chewies with your aligners to help you get a tighter fit. Simply insert your aligners, put your chewie between your teeth and chew as if it were a piece of gum. Use your chewies for 10-15 minutes at a time, 2-3 times per day.

Why don’t my aligners cover my molars?

Because we custom-make your aligners to fit your mouth, our goal is to make your aligners the appropriate size to realign your smile while being as unobtrusive as possible. Your aligners should cover at least one third of each molar.

How often should I wear my aligners?

Wear your aligners all the time as directed by your prescribed smile plan. Take them out for eating and drinking.

Will my teeth hurt during treatment?

Much like the days after a good workout at the gym, most people experience some tooth soreness for a few days after wearing new aligners. This is perfectly normal. It is a sign that your aligners are working, gently moving your teeth to their final destination. This soreness should gradually go away after the first few days of wearing new aligners. If the pain doesn't go away, contact our customer care team at (800) 688-4010.

Are there any visits to a dental office during treatment?

Most SmileDirectClub customers don't need to make any additional visits to a dental office during their invisible aligner treatment, aside from regular dental cleanings.

What happens if I lose an aligner?

If you lose one of your aligners, you will need to order a replacement right away. The cost for replacements is only $50 per tray. Your replacement aligner will generally ship within 7 to 10 business days of placing the order. During that time, you will need to wear the previous aligner to ensure that your teeth do not shift back to their original position. To order a replacement aligner please call our customer care team at (800) 688-4010.

What happens after my invisible aligner treatment is complete?

Protect your investment! We strongly recommend you safeguard your new smile with our custom-fit SmileDirectClub invisible retainers. Without retainers, teeth have a tendency to shift back to their original positions. Keep them from moving back with our custom-fit retainers. One set costs $99 and is available to purchase after treatment is completed. Call our customer care team at (800) 688-4010 to place your order.

How do I preserve my new smile after treatment?

As with any orthodontic treatment, you'll need to wear a retainer regularly to maintain your new smile. You'll wear your retainers 24 hours a day (except for eating and drinking) for the first two weeks. After that, you'll want to wear your retainers only while you sleep. We recommend replacing your retainers every six months to keep them fresh.

New Smile Kit

What's the difference between a new smile kit and an impression kit?

The new smile kit can be purchased at a number of partner retailers in the U.S. It allows you to start the impression process the very day you take it home! Simply register the kit, upload photos of your smile, and choose the impression tray that's the best fit for you. Then, we'll overnight impression materials to you so you can complete your impressions and get started on your new smile journey.

An impression kit can be purchased on You'll receive it in 2-3 business days, so you can get started on making your impressions from the comfort of your own home.

In either instance, the dentist or orthodontist overseeing your case will use your impressions to build a custom smile plan for you, showing you how your teeth will move month by month with invisible aligners. In lieu of a new smile kit or impression kit, you can visit a SmileShop for a 3D scan of your smile. Find a SmileShop near you at

How does the new smile kit work?

Once you purchase your new smile kit, start by registering it online at Try on the small, medium, and large impression trays in your kit and select the size that's best for you. Take photos of your smile with the help of the Smile Stretcher and upload them to the site. Then, we'll assign a doctor licensed in your state to oversee your progress. We'll also overnight an impression materials kit to you so you can get started with making your impressions. Once complete, mail your impressions to us so your dentist or orthodontist can build your new smile plan.

How do I know which impression tray is the right size?

Find your size using the 3 sample trays in your kit. Pick a size for your upper and lower teeth. The correct tray should fit in your mouth, with your lip pulled over the front, and have room for your teeth to move around a bit. The tray should capture up to 2 of your molars and should not be pushing into your gumline or be super snug on your teeth.

How do I register my new smile kit?

Go to Locate your unique registration code on the card in your new smile kit and enter it on the site. Select the impression tray size that's right for you (small, medium, or large), and upload photos of your smile using the Smile Stretcher. Once you're registered, we'll assign a licensed dentist or orthodontist to oversee your new smile, and we'll overnight your impression materials to you.

What if I need to return my new smile kit?

Return your unopened new smile kit to the retailer at which it was originally purchased.

How do I use bright on™ premium teeth whitening?

First brush your teeth but do not floss. Then open the bright on™ premium whitening pen and twist the bottom until the gel is visible on the brush. Brush the gel onto your front top and bottom teeth in a circular motion and wear for 5 minutes. The whitening gel will lightly foam and then as it penetrates, it will dissipate. After 5 minutes, spit out excess. Your teeth will continue to whiten after the gel absorbs, so don’t rinse, drink or eat for at least 20 minutes after you’re done.

Once you order your impression materials kit, we'll also include an LED accelerator light to use with your whitening. After applying the whitening gel, plug the light into your phone using the appropriate attachment, insert it into your mouth, and wear it for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes, take out the light and spit out the excess gel. Your teeth will continue to whiten after the gel absorbs, so don’t rinse, drink or eat for at least 20 minutes after you’re done.

I lost my registration code. What do I do?

We can help! Give us a call at 800-688-4010 or send us a chat. All you’ll need is the receipt you were given at the store when you bought the kit. Simply provide the date of the purchase and your transaction number, and we can generate a new code for you.

Does the Smile Guarantee still apply to the new smile kit?

Yes! If your doctor determines you're not a candidate for aligners for any reason, we'll refund you the total cost of your new smile kit.
