How do I know when I need mid-course correction or re-evaluation?

Mid-course correction (MCC) or re-evaluation at the end of your smile plan (sometimes called “refinements”) is not actually the norm, says Jeffrey Sulitzer, DMD, Lead Dentist at SmileDirectClub.

“When you follow your smile plan as prescribed, it’s unlikely you’ll need additional aligners at the end of your plan,” says Dr. Sulitzer. “In addition, a mid-course correction shouldn’t be necessary and is actually unusual.”

The average SmileDirectClub smile plan is 6 months. We’re excited to help you on your smile journey and want to make sure getting the smile you love is as seamless as possible – no mid-course correction or refinements/re-evaluation necessary. Follow these easy tips below.

1. Stick to your prescription.

One of the biggest perks of our invisible aligners is that they’re not only discreet, but they’re removable. Taking them out to eat and drink is super convenient. Just don’t let that tempt you not to wear them! All smile plans prescribe wearing your aligners 24/7, regardless of the length of the plan. Like when you get braces put on or when your doctor prescribes a medication because you’re sick, you’ll see best results if you follow that prescription to a T. To get your ideal smile, wear your aligners all day and night, except when eating, drinking, and brushing/flossing.

2. Maintain good dental hygiene.

Brush after meals and snacks – and always before putting your aligners back in your mouth. Experts also recommend flossing daily. Feel free to use a clear or whitening mouthwash as directed to freshen your breath and help clean hard-to-reach spaces between your teeth. But remember, mouthwash isn’t a replacement for good ol’ brushing and flossing.

3. Clean your aligners.

Think of your invisible aligners as an extension of your mouth – it’s important to keep them clean, too! Whenever you remove your aligners, try rinsing them with cold water to help prevent saliva from building up on the plastic. Whatever you do, don’t use hot or boiling water to clean them! Doing so can warp and ruin your aligners. Another pro tip: Use regular antibacterial soap – not toothpaste – to gently clean aligners.

4. Bring your case with you on the go.

Keep your aligner case in the same easily accessible spot, and always bring your case with you when you’re leaving home. You can store your aligners in the case while eating or drinking and then easily put them back in your mouth once finished. The last thing you want is to forget your aligner case while you’re on the go! This includes travel plans, too. Pack your next set of aligners and aligner case whenever you’re going on vacation.

5. Register your aligners.

Once you receive your aligners, log in to your account at to check them in. We’ll send you notifications about when it’s time to switch to a new set of aligners. 6. Continue regular dental checkups.

Unless you’re at a high risk of cavities or gum disease, experts typically recommend you see a dentist once or twice a year. Dental checkups are an excellent way to check for issues you may not even know are there yet. Once you start wearing aligners, continue visiting your local dentist throughout your smile journey. They can still complete your regular dental cleanings and, if necessary, other treatments that arise.
