Everything you need to know about retainers

After achieving your new, winning smile, you don’t want to undo all that work. That’s where your SmileDirectClub invisible retainer comes in.

Retainers are part of treatment plans after you straighten teeth, according to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). They’re how you keep that new smile you love looking it’s best.

Once you straighten teeth with your SmileDirectClub aligners and see your new smile, it’s tempting to think that’s all there is to it. We get that.

But not using your retainer as directed could put your new smile at risk. Hiding your smile again, that’s not for you. You’ve come too far to go back.

So here’s what you need to know about how our invisible retainers help you keep your new smile looking new.

What do retainers do?smiledirectclub aligners

SmileDirectClub retainers have three main functions:

  1. They keep your teeth from moving back into their original, pre-treatment position. According to the AAO, retainers do this by helping to rebuild and strengthen the bone of your teeth that holds your beautiful smile in place.
  2. They help you keep the smile you love and worked so hard to achieve using your SmileDirectClub aligners. Just like your body changes over time, your teeth can change, too. Retainers help maintain the proper tooth alignment and healthy positioning, according to the AAO.
  3. They’re necessary to maintain your Lifetime Smile GuaranteeTM, which will protect your smile for life1.

How long do you need to wear your SmileDirectClub retainer?

Your SmileDirectClub retainer will look similar to your aligners, but a bit thicker. You need to wear retainers for as long as you want your teeth to remain straight. Consider it as part of your daily oral hygiene, like brushing or flossing.

To keep them straight, follow these rules:

  • Wear them every night. The AAO recommends wearing your retainers each night, overnight, after you’ve brushed and flossed your teeth.
  • Replace your retainers every 6 months. It’s important to clean your retainers just as you clean your aligners. But over time retainers will stretch and get normal wear and tear. So, replacing them every 6 months ensures the plastic stays strong and the retainer does its job to keep your smile in place.

Why does SmileDirectClub offer retainers?

SmileDirectClub offers invisible retainers to help you keep the smile you love after using our invisible aligners.

Why SmileDirectClub retainers are clearly the best choice

We know you have a lot of options when it comes to retainers. Here’s why you should choose ours.

  • Our retainers are removable, just like our aligners. Removable retainers help you keep your teeth clean. Old-school permanent devices, also known as fixed retainers, can interfere with good oral hygiene and encourage plaque buildup.
  • Our retainers are invisible, just like our aligners. Unlike old-school metal or wire retainers, known as Maxillary Hawley Appliance — the kind your parents probably had — SmileDirectClub retainers are barely visible.
  • Our retainers are affordable. If you lose one, it costs a lot less to replace than most retainers, which can cost hundreds of dollars.
  • Our retainers are made to last. SmileDirectClub retainers are made of thick .76mm thermoplastic polyurethane. They last up to 6 months.
  • With our retainer plan, you get free touch-ups. If you notice changes in your smile, you’re allowed one touch-up per year for as long as you keep your Lifetime Smile Guarantee. So if your smile moves, you can get new retainers made that will address those issues.
  • They’re shipped to directly to you, no office visit needed.
  • We make it easy for you to maintain your retainer routine. Don’t worry about forgetting to swap out your retainer after 6 months. With our retainer subscription program we automatically send out your next set of retainers every 6 months. So you don’t have to wait and worry that your teeth will shift out of place.
