What’s the difference between SmileDirectClub and Invisalign?

A straighter, brighter smile can change your life — but the variety of teeth straightening solutions on the market can make it difficult to figure out how to start your smile journey.

We’re here to break down your options for clear aligners.

Unlike braces, clear aligners for your teeth are a series of discreet, plastic trays that move your teeth over time. If you’re considering aligners and wondering what the best choice is for you between SmileDirectClub vs. Invisalign, read on.

SmileDirectClub vs. Invisalign: everything to consider before getting started

We think you’ll find SmileDirectClub comes out on top as the easiest and most affordable option for those with mild to moderate alignment issues, but read on for more information on the key differences between the two.

What are your teeth alignment issues?

The first step of your smile journey is identifying what issue you’re trying to fix. Clear braces from Invisalign are a good option for those with mild to complex issues, including major crowding, underbite, overbite, crossbite, and open bite. SmileDirectClub clear aligners are ideal for mild to moderate teeth straightening, such as crowding, spacing, and gaps.

What is your budget?

Invisalign costs on average $3,000 to $8,000. Your wallet is likely to be a lot happier with SmileDirectClub, which costs 60% less than braces: $1,895 up front. Or choose SmilePay, which requires a $250 down payment followed by 24 monthly payments of $85, without the hassle of filling out any forms or getting a credit check. We also reimburse for most insurance and accept HSA, FSA, and CareCredit.

How quickly (and easily) do you want to get started?

Your first step with Invisalign is to take a free assessment online. If you’re a candidate, then you’ll visit an Invisalign-approved doctor in your area to establish your treatment plan.

With SmileDirectClub, you can complete your smile journey without even leaving your home. You’ll start with a free, 30-second online smile assessment. Once approved, you can make customized impressions of your teeth at home using our handy impression kit. Then your clear aligners will be mailed to you.

If you’re seeking a personal touch, you can visit one of our SmileShops across the country — new locations are opening every week. SmileShops are fun and inviting. One of our SmileGuides will guide you through the entire appointment, using our incredible 3D scanning technology to capture an image of your teeth on the spot.

Will you need to see a doctor?

Once you get set up with your Invisalign treatment plan, you’ll need to see a doctor for monthly checkups.

Dr. Jeffrey Sulitzer

With SmileDirectClub, you can interface with the professionals in whatever way is most convenient for you. You’ll receive a doctor-directed treatment plan with a preview of how your new smile should look. Then you’ll remotely check in with a licensed dentist or orthodontist every 90 days, or more frequently if you and your doctor wish. If you need any additional assistance, we also offer 24/7 customer care via phone, email, or chat. But you’re not required to make monthly doctor’s visits.

Are you up for more treatment than just using aligners?

You may need to have your teeth shaved down before getting Invisalign. Your plan may also require the use of attachments and buttons. Attachments are tooth-colored shapes affixed to your teeth before or during your Invisalign treatment. They help apply extra force to your teeth. You’ll also need retainers following Invisalign treatment.

With SmileDirectClub aligners, you will not have to shave your teeth or wear buttons and attachments. Just slip on the trays each day, and your teeth will gently shift over time. SmileDirectClub recommends retainers after treatment as well.

How long do you want to wait for your new smile?

Invisalign treatment takes an average of 12 to 18 months. The average SmileDirectClub treatment plan is only six months. How does SmileDirectClub work so quickly? Because of our 22-hour, continuous wear plan (though we do have a nighttime-only option, too), mild to moderate alignment issues can be resolved surprisingly fast.

Does SmileDirectClub work?

Even though it’s the easiest, most affordable option out there for a better smile, SmileDirectClub really works. Check out our Grin Life Blog for SmileDirectClub before-and-after stories. You can also read SmileDirectClub reviews from some of our happy customers.
