1. They’re different from SmileDirectClub invisible aligners.
SmileDirectClub retainers are thicker than the invisible aligners to hold your beautiful new smile in place. Retainers are made from thicker .76mm thermoplastic polyurethane and built to keep your teeth from moving back to their original position.
2. You really do have to wear your retainers every night.
Wear your very first retainer set all the time for 2 weeks, just like you would aligners. This means taking them out only when eating or drinking anything other than cool water. After the 2 weeks are up, or if this isn’t your first set, wear your retainers just at night, every night (for at least 8 hours). Good night, retainers.
3. You should order a new set every 6 months.
Replace your retainers every 6 months to keep them clean, fresh, and tight-fitting. While you can clean them, they will still get dirty and degrade over time. Just like a toothbrush (or socks). 4. You should clean them every night.
Keep your retainers clean by soaking in a mixture of gentle liquid soap and warm water. You can also use a retainer cleaner, but avoid abrasive cleaners, like toothpaste, which can scratch your retainers and cause damage. Never use bleach, alcohol, or other harsh chemicals as cleaning agents, and avoid boiling water, which can warp your retainer friends. We’re going for sparkling smiles here, not scratched-up gums.
5. Retainers are for life.
Yes, you will need to wear your retainers every night for the rest of your life – or for as long as you want your straight smile to last. But you can grin happily, knowing your teeth won’t shift back.
